Snail & Slug Control: Sluggo

This is the best slug control. Once a week we sprinkle pet-safe Sluggo around the outer edges of our gardens and raised beds and we experience very little slug damage and see very few slugs.

How to reserve the chicks you want: Pick your date(s): Take a look at the hatch schedule or the hatching calendar below for the hatch dates of your desired breeds. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of that page you can see all the dates by breed. Make your appointment: Go to the appointment setter and set an appointment for no sooner than the day after the hatch day and no later than a week after hatch day, that is, if the hatch is on the 3rd, set an appointment for any day between the 4th and the 10th. The chicks need time to rest up between adventures. In the notes section of your appointment requests, tell me how many of which breed you wish to reserve, and what you would accept as substitutes.

Well we got some happy news recently. Over the last two years we have been working to establish a quality Ermine Ameraucana breeding flock. Ermine Ameraucanas have tricky genetics and one of the key players in a successful flock is a Dominant White bird, preferably the rooster. To really be sure that one's white bird is a Dominant White, one needs to send in feathers or blood for for genetic testing, which we did, and are happy to learn that Mr. Edward here is, as we suspected, Dominant White. Hooray! Chicks are on the hatching schedule now: https://www.flowerfeatherfarm.com/hatchdates #ermineameraucana #chicks #pnwlife #pnw #babychicks

One of my chick customers sent me this video recently, asking about the squishy ball on her babies’ throats. This is the baby’s crop, a little pouch on the right side of her throat that she stuffs full of food. Over time, the food is released into the gizzard where it is ground up into smaller pieces in preparation for being digested. It’s perfectly normal and healthy.

I was chatting with a local woman who was gearing up to get into hatching and I reminded her to send me her details so I could include her in the list I keep of Washington State Poultry resources. "Why do you do that?" she asked, "Are you wondering why I am supporting the competition?" "Yes," she replied, "This is your business." "If people don't buy my chicks, I would far rather they buy yours, and not the feed store chicks." My thinking is that other breeders and farmers are my community, and the feed stores selling shipped chicks are my competition. So, if your side hustle is chicks, ducklings, goslings, peachicks, etc., you are welcome to send me your details -- preferably in the same format as the other postings -- and I will happily add you to my list. And if you are already on the list, this is a great time to double-check it and make sure your entry is up-to-date. The format I want: Your County Your Farm Name and website link Your name and your neighborhood/city What you offer: chicks? Hatching eggs? Grow-Outs? The breeds you offer, organized by bird type (Chicken, Duck, etc.) How you want people to contact you. https://www.flowerfeatherfarm.com/chickenpeeps
Swedish Flower Hens evolved naturally in Sweden, living off the land without human influence: a landrace. Skånsk Blommehöna aka Swedish Flower Hens lay cream-colored eggs and are good foragers, good predator avoiders, and oh so pretty. They come crested and uncrested and hailing from snowy Sweden, they are unfazed by our rainy PNW winters. #sfh #swedishflowerhen #pnw #whatcomcounty #farmlife #whatcomfarms #bellinghamwa
The $600 chick.

In March of 2023 I had Ermine hatching eggs shipped to me from a reputable breeder. I had a good hatch, and they all grew up to be roosters. In August of 2023 I ordered more hatching eggs from the woman who developed the Ermine Ameraucana in the first place. I had a good hatch, and kept one rooster and one hen, culling out all the ones with undesirable traits. Two more rounds, one in May of 2024 and one in July of 2024, gave me one hen and one rooster. So about $600 invested, and about two years of food and housing, so I’m pretty happy to have — at last — hatched my first Ermine Ameraucana chick from an egg that was laid here. I pretty blue egg even.

I get 3-4 eggs a week now, and will be hatching, and keeping, all of them for the next few months. I hope to offer chicks this summer.

Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Marans lay the dark chocolate brown eggs, just as the Black Copper Marans, but to my eyes are a prettier bird. The roosters are especially stunning and contribute a dark brown egg gene to your flock. #marans #wheatenmarans #browneggs #pnw #whatcomcounty #babychicks #farmlife
So fluffy! So gorgeous! Jubilee Orpingtons are gentle winter-hardy birds and faithful layers of brown eggs. Their extreme fluffiness and brown/gold feathering makes them excellent yard-art as they look like a pile of autumn leaves trundling about. Introduced in 1897 by the WIlliam Cook family to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign, Jubilee Orpingtons have a mahogany ground color with white-tipped black spangles, white shanks and feet, and red eyes. The parent flock is one of my healthiest, frequently giving me 100% fertility rates and 100% hatch rates. #pnw #whatcomcounty #babychicks #farmlife #jubileeorpington
